Types of Dental Extractions

A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. A dentist will usually perform this procedure when a tooth is decayed or damaged. If a tooth is impacted, the dentist may perform an extraction before placing the implant. If a baby tooth is preventing the permanent tooth from coming in, the dentist may recommend extraction.

The tooth may be removed for medical or dental reasons.

Reasons for a dental extraction may include:

Simple Extraction

Simple tooth extraction involves removing a tooth that is not visible in the mouth, either because it has not fully erupted or because it has broken off at the gum line. A simple extraction may be done using a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and gums.

The dentist will grab onto the tooth with their hand and rock it back and forth until the tooth breaks loose from the gums. The dentist will then grab the tooth with a pair of forceps and pull it out.

Surgical Extraction

After examining the patient, the dentist may advise a surgical extraction. This is a procedure where the dentist makes an incision in the gum line, pulls the tooth out, and stitches the wound closed. Surgical extractions are normally only used for teeth in the very back of the mouth or for teeth that have yet to come in.

When are Extractions Necessary?

Your wisdom teeth are the last teeth to grow into your mouth. Most people have four wisdom teeth—two on top (maxillary) and two on the bottom (mandibular).

Most people do not have enough room for these teeth in the mouth, so they often grow in at odd angles or get stuck beneath the gum line. When teeth are impacted, they typically need to be removed.
